Entry Envy Sunday Morning Coffee with Jennifer Lea

Some of you know my story, and some don’t, so I’m going to back this ship up a bit and start at the beginning. On January 10, 2020, I moved what I could of 15 years of belongings out of my house, left the divorce papers on the counter, picked up my kids from school, and moved in with my parents at the age of 42. This was the most difficult decision I have made in my adult life. All divorcees have their stories and none are pretty. It’s a very ugly period in life. Getting through it is nothing short of awful. It doesn’t matter whose idea it was, it’s hard.

The Beginning

August 1, 2020, I moved into my fixer-upper and started day one with repainting the garage. The garage may sound like an odd place to start, but it was four walls of 1974 dark olive green and wasn’t going to work for me. I knew once I started moving stuff in, it would never get done, so I closed the garage door as quickly as I opened it and headed to the hardware store to pick up 4 gallons of white paint (I knew it was going to take a few coats to cover that!) and the remodel began. I proceeded over the next ten months to repaint every ceiling and wall, replace every light and plumbing fixture, and restored 75% of the floors. It was in April of 2021 that I came home one day and couldn’t handle the old house numbers that were falling off the house any longer. I went on a Google mission to find a modern house number sign and when I couldn’t find what I wanted, I went to the garage, found some leftover wood, and made my own. I quickly realized that the little planter box on the front was adorable and going to be way more work each month than I had time for! I thought, “Wouldn’t it be nice if someone could just ship me new decorations for it each month?” And right then and there, the idea for Entry Envy, which most certainly didn’t have a name yet, was born.

Entry Envy Was Born

I did market research in May at a craft show and decided there was enough interest to move forward with the concept. I needed a name, website, and business plan. I worked hard over the next five months and launched Entry Envy on October 1, 2021. If you’ve ever started a company from scratch, you know this is not easy or inexpensive and most companies take at least two years before they turn a profit. The second hardest decision in my adult life I made was to quit a six-figure corporate job to give 100% of my time and resources to making Entry Envy successful and it is paying off. We were just awarded Best New Subscription of the Year by SUBTA!

You Ask- We Give

What does all of this have to do with anything? The feedback is you want more of me. My story, my authenticity, my passion for getting women in the trades, my design inspiration, and my projects. So, I’m going to give it to you. I am not a woman who will show you how to remodel your kitchen in a 30-second time-lapse with makeup on and hair done. But, I will teach you how to get dirty and get work done. I blogged my entire remodel on my website cheaperthanwine.com, which is a great resource for how-to projects, including one of my favorites, glitter grout in my girls' bathroom! I am not going to pretend my life is perfect or my nearly teenage daughters aren’t real crabby some days. I want to be here for you, in the here and now, and freely share anything I can to help make you happier and your life easier.
