How to Choose the Perfect Decorative Sign for Your Home
I love a great decorative sign, and there are so many different options to choose from. When considering adding a sign to your space, keep these important factors in mind:
1. Existing Color Scheme
You want the sign to complement the existing color scheme. You don’t want to repaint the entire wall just because you found a cute sign! If you have neutral walls, you can opt for a bigger, bolder sign.
However, when it comes to signs with words, I generally prefer keeping them neutral—like black, white, or natural wood—as they tend to blend into spaces more easily.
2. What Message Do You Want to Convey?
Is this a space where you need extra motivation, like an office? In that case, a sign like “She designed a life she loved” might be fitting. For a powder room, a humorous sign—like one in my friend’s house that says “Need TP? Text me”—could add charm.
In spaces like the entryway, kitchen, or hearth room, you might want something more family-oriented, embracing themes of love, laughter, and memories.
3. Size
Size matters in all things, including signs! I lean more minimalist in my décor style rather than a “more is more” approach. There is no right or wrong, but I believe decorative signs can easily be overdone, leaving you unsure where to look.
There's a fine line between making your home feel welcoming and making it look like a home décor store, stuffed with items that need constant updating.
Use decorative signs sparingly and with intention. Sometimes, a small sign is the perfect decorative accent for a nook or another overlooked space that just needs a little touch. Keep in mind, though, these areas often get neglected when dusting, so don’t let that happen!
On the other hand, a decorative sign can make a bold statement and be the focal point of a room, depending on your décor style. The general rule of thumb is that artwork (and yes, decorative signs count as art) should take up about 2/3 of the wall space. Sometimes that means a collection of pieces, and sometimes one larger sign will do the job. Just be sure your sign takes up approximately 2/3 of the width of the area.
4. Exterior Signs
Exterior signs can add so much personality to your home. A fun sign by the back patio might say, “I’m outdoorsy in that I like to drink wine on patios” or “Sandy feet welcome” if you live by a lake. These touches warm up a space and bring a smile to your face.
For the front of the house, house number signs not only help with curb appeal and creating a welcoming entry but also serve a functional purpose for safety and convenience. In case of an emergency, it's crucial that EMTs can find your home quickly, which is why proper house number identification is so important.
Delivery drivers will also appreciate clearly visible house numbers, and even more so if there’s a last name or initial for additional confirmation. Entry Envy offers a solution for both with custom exterior house signs that feature a planter box. The planter box accommodates our monthly and quarterly floral, holiday, and seasonal décor, making it easy to keep your front porch stylish and appealing all year long.
Final Thoughts
I caution you to be mindful of the space you have to work with on your front porch. Like any other room, the more furniture or décor you add, the smaller the space will appear.
-
For large porches: An oversized rug, a cute bench with seasonal pillows, and one or two planters alongside a house number sign near the door can create a welcoming environment.
-
For smaller porches: Use an oversized rug to make the space feel larger and add a wall-mounted sign to add the perfect touch.
Decorative signs can be excellent additions for both the interior and exterior of your home. Be thoughtful about the existing color scheme, size, purpose, and desired outcome.
