Fall Decorating Ideas for Warm First Impressions

Fall Decorating Ideas for Warm First Impressions

Fall Decorating Ideas for Warm First Impressions

Imagine that you walk up to your friend's house to drop off something for her. You immediately notice the beautiful fall planters with blooming purple mums surrounded by gourds, pumpkins, and a seasonal wreath. Your mind first says, "wow," Sarah's front porch looks so good; she's really got it together! Compare this vision to the friend who you love equally as much, but as you walk up to her house, you notice her son's bike lying in the yard, her trash can is half hazardly up against the garage, there are sidewalk chalk remnants in the driveway, her planters have dead flowers in them from summer, and the porch has leaves all over it.

What goes through your mind? Do you feel sorry for her? Do you think, "thank God, it looks like my house," or perhaps offer even to help her out because clearly, she needs it? Maybe she does or doesn't, and whether we like it or not, and even at even a subconscious level, we judge and compare ourselves, our house, our "whatever." As unhealthy as it may be, the reality is first impressions matter. Whether we're talking about a "stop the scroll" social image or in person, it matters! So, what does your front porch say about you?

In less than an hour, you can easily upgrade your front porch to make a warm first impression for fall. Let's do this!

Knockdown summer's spider webs.

Get out the broom and clean things up a bit.

Wash the glass.

Storm doors, windows, panes in your front door, etc. The theory is that if your front porch and front door are clean, the rest of your house must be too. Who is the hell cares if that's only half the truth. Let's make the front porch look good!

Pull out the pink flowers.

It hurts my heart to kill annuals before they've decided they are done for the season so I leave everything that is still alive, except pink flowers! I can work with orange, purple, yellow, and even white…but the pink has to come out of your planters for fall. If removing your plants makes your planter feel bare, add some bunched burlap to cover up the dirt. It will be a beautiful backdrop for tips 2 and 3 below.

Add fake mums to your planters.

Listen, I know half of you just went, noooooo, but, hear me out. I want my pots to look good all the time with zero effort. I don't want to wait for the mums to bloom. I don't want to watch them die. Crazy busy mom over here who doesn't have time to give the mums the water they need and deserve, so I choose to bypass the stress of having to water them and then the guilt for when I have killed them. Just go straight to the silk version. You'll get at least two seasons from them and can buy them at your local craft store most of the season for 50%.

Add pumpkins and gourds.

So easy, but it's an instant announcement it's fall. I like to choose unique, odd shapes and unusual colors. I love long stems on the pumpkins, and if they still have part of the vine on them, even better. When you think about decorating, always think in dimensions and layers. It is so much more interesting for the eye to look at than anything simple and straightforward, but this doesn't mean it has to be hard! It often just means "clustering" things or, in some cases, piling on top of each other. Your front porch is a little like its own party… it's way better to have 50 people in a crowded apartment than 50 people in an open ballroom. Or a dinner entre on a diet…put it on a small plate to make it feel bigger. You want things to "feel full." With that said, let's be reasonable and make sure your guests can still get to your front door!
